Is my tap water safe to drink?

Tap water is usually treated with chemicals to make it drinkable, but tests often show contaminants that exceed health guidelines.  This link and picture below shows a search that was done on the 19102 area code in Philadelphia, PA on March 15, 2013.

The first item on these test results show the presence of trihalomethanes.  Why are these four (chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform) bad for you?  A major challenge for water suppliers is how to control and limit the risks from pathogens and disinfection byproducts. It is important to provide protection from pathogens while simultaneously minimizing health risks to the population from disinfection byproducts.

Some people who drink water containing total trihalomethanes in excess of the maximum contaminant level over many years could experience liver, kidney, or central nervous system problems and increased risk of cancer.  Follow the link below to see what’s in your tap water.
